Optical discs, once the primary medium for data storage, have largely been rendered obsolete by the advent of significantly more capacious storage solutions. The primary driver behind this transition is the stark difference in storage capacity. While discs could typically hold around 700MB of data, this is a minuscule amount compared to the terabytes offered by modern Solid State Drives (SSDs), including the lightning-fast NVMe variants.

The escalating demands of contemporary software are a significant factor. As software evolves, frequent updates are released, and even the most basic professional applications now easily surpass 1GB in size. For professionals in fields like design, the requirements are even more substantial. Design software alone can necessitate a minimum of 5GB for installation, with an additional 10-15GB of free disk space recommended for seamless operation. This is further compounded by the generation of numerous temporary files and automatic backups, all of which consume considerable storage. Consequently, traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) have become the go-to solution for meeting these storage needs.

However, there remains a niche for optical media in specific, less demanding scenarios. For individuals primarily working with applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in an office environment, the relatively small file sizes associated with these programs make DVDs a viable option for data storage.
